  SLEEP APNEA

Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea events are intermittent periods of time throughout the night where we are not breathing for a minimum of ten seconds or more. We try to breathe but are unable to do so because our airway is closed or obstructed. The main cause of an airway being blocked is the fact that our tongue has dropped back into the airway. This is most likely to occur when we are sleeping on our back. When you wake up gasping for air it can be a sign of sleep apnea. When this occurs, our brain and other vital organs have been deprived of oxygen. We all know if we do not breathe for a period of four minutes or longer, we will suffer brain damage and die. We can go on for days without food or water but oxygen is absolutely essential.

Oral Appliance Therapy

Some advantages to oral appliance therapy to manage your sleep apnea and/or snoring include:

  • Can be used in conjunction with CPAP
• Can be used in conjunction with certain surgical procedures
• Can sleep in nearly any position when wearing an oral appliance
• We can simultaneously manage bruxism, clenching and TMJ disorders
• Easy to travel
• No need for any electricity
• No noise

Patients with sleep apnea may have multiple times throughout the night where they stop breathing for ten seconds or longer. If a patient has severe sleep apnea, they may sometimes have four hundred times throughout the night that they stop breathing.

How well does your car engine run if you cut off the fuel? How well does your computer run if you shut of the electricity? They all shut down, they all stop working. We do too.

Do you want to take seven years off your life with undiagnosed/untreated sleep apnea?

If you have high blood pressure, GERD, diabetes or cardiovascular disease, you may have sleep apnea.

Whether it is you or a loved one that has one or more of these symptoms, it would be beneficial to receive an evaluation. Give your primary care physician a call, give us a call, we are here to help you. We want you to be able to live your life to the fullest.

Obstructive sleep apnea affects nearly twenty million Americans. Are you one of them? It has been on the rise for several years. What is very alarming is the number of children who are diagnosed with sleep apnea. We treat both children and adults in our practice. The most common symptoms associated with sleep apnea are daytime sleepiness, waking unrefreshed in the morning, headaches, bedwetting in children and simply fuzzy and unclear thinking.

More signs and symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Frequent heavy snoring
• Fatigue
• Significant daytime drowsiness
• Gasping when waking up

There are other health related issues that can have a sleep apnea connection such as high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, GERD, atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure. There is more research being done connected to the importance of getting good sleep. The better we sleep, the better our overall health. If we have poor, non restoring sleep, our own personal battery will continue to run down. Good sleep is essential to good health.
